Women’s Equality Day commemorates women gaining the right to vote in 1920 after much protest and activism. In honor of that, we want to spotlight our real-life Goddesses like Harriet Tubman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and Joan of Arc, who represent the strength of the female spirit to always rise above adversity.

We’ve also put together some special sets that represent the resilience, power, and determination of all women. It’s safe to say that it took too long for women to get the right to vote, and it came with a lot of opposition. It all began with Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a young mother from upstate New York, and Lucretia Mott, a Quaker abolitionist, who together gathered approximately 300 people (mostly women) to attend the Seneca Falls Convention, where they prepared their goals for the women’s rights movement. 

This first meeting occurred in July 1848, and it would take 72 years of strategizing, fighting, dealing with setbacks, and, sadly, alienating African-American women, before the 19th Amendment - giving women the right to vote throughout the United States - was ratified. Unfortunately, some early supporters of the women’s rights movement did not live long enough to see this happen.

In 1971, Rep. Bella Abzug (D-NY) suggested designating August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. The commemorative date was passed in 1973. Since then, more and more people, organizations, companies, and businesses have participated in honoring this day. At Awe, we think it’s important to revisit the importance of this day and what led to it so many years ago.
